Spring Curtsy Afghan Free Crochet Pattern – Part 1

Once upon a time, I was contacted by the kind folks at BluPrint and commissioned to make a Metlasse Afghan so that they could turn it into a kit. I finished this beautiful Spring Curtsy Afghan after pouring tons of creativity into it – this was to be my first BluPrint Kit after all!

Well, after mailing the blanket out to my BluPrint contact, we got the news. BluPrint was shut down for good. No more BluPrint. And I was left with this stunning pattern, that now had no home. Luckily, after peeking around for new homes for it, I have landed on offering it as a free pattern on the blog! Say ‘hello’ to the Spring Curtsy Afghan Free Crochet Pattern – Part 1!

There are a few things to consider before beginning this free pattern:

Because this was a commissioned piece, it was going to go through BluPrint’s rigorous tech editing and testing phase as part of turning it into one of their kits. And because I’ve decided to offer it as a free pattern, you should know straight away that this blanket has not been tested (yet!). It has not been tech edited either. So I will definitely say that there could be small pattern errors that come up, and I will address and update them as they arise. You can contact me if you find an issue.

The next thing I’ll say is that this is an INTERMEDIATE pattern. It’s not for the feint at heart. It features complex stitches, constantly changing rows, and lots of counting. If you haven’t attempted a Metlasse Afghan in the past, this is beautiful, but you may need to read and re-read the instructions a few times in order to get the stitches in some places. This afghan features stranded colourwork as well, so it will require you to change from one colour to another mid-round.

That all being said, YOU CAN DO IT! I believe in you. If you have helpful tips feel free to leave them in the comments below. And also please understand that at this time, and also never in the past, will I/ have I offered tutorial videos for patterns. I wish I had time to do them, but alas, I prefer to be a commissioned artist, and haven’t dabbled in the free video area of our wonderful community. Thanks for respecting my choice, I appreciate you~.

  1. I have a query. This is for round 4 and onwards, as it repeats till round 15.
From Round 4: Change to B, ch 2, *bphdc 3, with C 4-dc Cluster between next 2 sts, change to B; repeat from * around, join to 1st st–32 sts.) Does this mean that the ‘bphdc 3’ is pink? as on the picture it looks to be the silver? Cos then it says ‘with C 4-dc Cluster’, and isn’t it supposed to be the pink not the silver?
I’ve read a reread it, and tried to crochet it as it I read it but it is teh opposite color to the pictures. Or am I reading it wrong.
    Cheers Linda

  2. I am confused by row 4. Mine doesn’t look right. Am I supposed to cluster in between post the stitches or split it between two stitches. When I bphdc, it brings my center color forward but it doesn’t look like that in the photo. Are we working on the right side or wrong side?

    1. Hey there! You will be doing your Cluster after your 3rd bphdc, in the space between the sts before the next st.

  3. Hi Lee! I love this pattern. Is there any way to buy the pattern? I don’t like when I print these sheets with all the shenanigans on the pges 😳🙄😂

      1. This is a lovely pattern. Thank you for making it available to us for free. In reading over the instructions…I have a question. Starting at round 4, what exactly is the bphdc 3? I know it’s a back post hdc but what is the 3 telling us to do? Thank you.

  4. Hi Lee! Thank you for the gorgeous pattern! I have a question about difficulty. I am an advanced beginner who has tried a variety of stitches, but I have not done much colorwork and don’t really enjoy it yet. If I make this pattern in a single color, how would you assess the difficulty? Thanks! I’m a big fan!

    1. Hey there Nicole! Making it in one color would definitely make it easier! I’ve listed all of the special stitches you’ll need for the entire Afghan above, maybe give them a look over and see if there’s anything that you think you wouldn’t be able to complete. If you take it step by step, I think you’d be fine.

  5. Thank you for the lovely Pattern of Spring Curtsy. I love those flower bunches on the edges.
And what a lovely Blue Ring you are wearing. What is the stone?
