Hi everyone! And welcome to 2026!! I hope you had an amazing Christmas and New Year, I spent mine relaxing and catching up on some shows I had missed out on during the craziness that was 2025! Now that everyone is back at work and getting back to the grind, I wanted to share a few of the patterns that I made exclusively for Lion Brand Yarn in the summer of 2025 that have yet to make it to the CoCo Crochet Lee Blog! So, this month, the Sea Stitch Squad will be making their debut as free crochet patterns, starting with Walton the Whale – my favourite of the bunch!

Gauge is not essential to this project.
16 hdc in 3rd loop x 10 rows = 4”
Notes
- Whale body is worked in 2 flat pieces that are sewn together. Fins are worked in the round.
- Ch 1 at beginning of round or row does not count as a stitch.
- The yarn for this pattern is held double to achieve thickness. I used the starting tail and the center tail from each ball of yarn and held them together as I crocheted.
Abbreviations
3rd back loop = the 3rd back bar behind the top of the hdc stitch
3rd front loop = the 3rd front bar in front of the top of the hdc stitch
Ch = chain
Hdc = half double crochet
Hdc2tog = half double crochet 2 together
Sl st = slip stitch

Instructions:
Body Top-Center:
With A held double, work in continuous rounds.
Round 1: Ch 2, 8 hdc in 2nd ch from hook – 8 hdc.
*Note: Begin working in 3rd Back Loop for remaining rounds.
Round 2: Ch 1, 2 hdc in each st around – 16 hdc.
Round 3: Ch 1, [2 hdc, hdc in next] around – 24 hdc.
Round 4: Ch 1, [hdc, 2 hdc, hdc] around – 32 hdc.
Round 5: Ch 1, [2 hdc, hdc 3] around – 40 hdc.
Round 6: Ch 1, [hdc 2, 2 hdc, hdc 2] around – 48 hdc.
Round 7: Ch 1, [2 hdc, hdc 5] around – 56 hdc.
Round 8: Ch 1, [hdc 3, 2 hdc, hdc 3] around – 64 hdc.
Round 9: Ch 1, [2 hdc, hdc 7] around – 72 hdc.
Round 10: Ch 1, [hdc 3, 2 hdc, hdc 3] around – 80 hdc.
Continue to Top-Tail.
Top-Tail:
Continuing with A held double, begin working in turned rows.
Row 1: Ch 1, working in 3rd Back Loop hdc 20 leaving remaining 60 hdc unworked, turn – 20 hdc.
Row 2: Ch 1, working in 3rd Front Loop hdc2tog, hdc across to last 2 sts, hdc2tog, turn – 18 hdc.
Row 3: Ch 1, working in 3rd Back Loop hdc across, turn.
Rows 4-15: Repeat Rows 2-3 – 6 hdc at the end of Row 15.
Row 16: Repeat Row 2 – 4 hdc.
Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing. Continue to Top-Head.
Top-Head:
With A held double, skip next 20 sts of Top-Center and fasten on to next st in 3rd Back Loop. Work in turned rows.
Row 1: Ch 1, working in 3rd Back Loop hdc 20, turn leaving remaining 20 sts unworked – 20 hdc.
Row 2: Ch 1, working in 3rd Front Loop hdc2tog, hdc across to last 2 sts, hdc2tog, turn – 18 hdc.
Row 3: Ch 1, working in 3rd Back Loop hdc2tog, hdc across to last 2 sts, hdc2tog, turn – 16 hdc.
Rows 4-9: Repeat Rows 2-3 – 4 hdc at the end of Row 9.
Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing. Insert safety eyes to either side of Row 1 of Top-Head at the base of the 1st and last hdc.
Top-Border:
With A held double join 1st st of Row 9 of Top-Head.
Round 1: Ch 1, sc evenly around entire Top piece, join.
Fasten off.
Bottom:
With B held double work in turned rows.
Row 1 (RS): Ch 61, starting in 2nd ch from hook hdc across, turn – 60 hdc.
Row 2: Ch 1, working in 3rd Front Loop hdc2tog, hdc across to last 4 sts, hdc2tog x 2, turn – 57 hdc.
*Note: the end of the row with 2 decreases is the tail, the other end is the head.
Row 3: Ch 1, working in 3rd Back Loop hdc2tog x 2, hdc across, turn – 55 hdc.
Rows 4-7: Repeat Rows 2-3 – 45 hdc at the end of Row 7.
Row 8: Repeat Row 2 – 42 hdc.
Fasten off. With B held double join to underside of starting ch in 1st ch (the 1st ch made in row 1, at the Tail end of the piece).
Row 9: Ch 1, hdc across, turn – 60 hdc.
Rows 10-16: Repeat Rows 2-8.
Fasten off.
Bottom-Border:
With B held double join to any st around.
Round 1: Ch 1, sc evenly around entire piece, join.
Fasten off.
Assembly:
Using a length of A, sew the end of the tail closed on the Top piece by folding the final 3-4 rows of the tail lengthwise and sewing the row ends together. It will create a little cone/pocket at the end of the tail. Stuff this section lightly.
Next, using locking stitch markers, pin the top and bottom together in this order:
1). The width of the Bottom-Head piece (the wider end of the bottom piece) will be pinned to either side of Row 1 of Top-Head right underneath the eyes. Using A, seam between these two locked stitch markers joining the top and the bottom to create the head. Stuff this section lightly.
2). Pin the Top-Tail and Bottom tail ends together right against the pocket already made at the tail end of the Top-Tail.
3). You will notice that the Top-Center circle overlaps the Bottom of the body. To seam the sides together, pin the Bottom to the Top along each side underneath each edge of the Top-Center circle in a straight line between the tail and the head, leaving the edges of the Top-Center free to overlap the Bottom.
4). Using A seam each side of the whale body from tail to head leaving the edges of the Top-Center free, and stuffing lightly as work progresses.
5). Using A sew down each edge of the Top-Center overlapping the Bottom of the body.
Weave in ends.
Side Fin (Make 2):
With A held double.
Round 1: Ch 2, 3 hdc in 2nd ch from hook – 3 hdc.
Work in 3rd Back Loop for remaining rounds.
Round 2: 2 hdc, hdc around – 4 hdc.
Rounds 3-12: Repeat Round 2 – 14 hdc at the end of Round 12.
Round 13: [Hdc2tog, hdc 5] x 2 – 12 hdc.
Round 14: [Hdc2tog, hdc 4] x 2 – 10 hdc.
Round 15: [Hdc2tog, hdc 3] x 2 – 8 hdc.
Round 16: [Hdc2tog, hdc 2] x 2 – 6 hdc.
Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew to the sides of the Body at each side edge of the Top-Center.
Tail Fin (Make 2):
With A held double.
Round 1: Ch 2, 6 hdc in 2nd ch from hook – 6 hdc.
Work in 3rd Back Loop for remaining rounds.
Round 2: 2 hdc in each st around – 12 hdc.
Round 3: [2 hdc, hdc in next] around – 18 hdc.
Rounds 4-5: Hdc around.
Round 6: [Hdc2tog, hdc 7] x 2 – 16 hdc.
Round 7: [Hdc2tog, hdc 6] x 2 – 14 hdc.
Round 8: [Hdc2tog, hdc 5] x 2 – 12 hdc.
Round 9: [Hdc2tog, hdc 4] x 2 – 10 hdc.
Round 10: [Hdc2tog, hdc 3] x 2 – 8 hdc.
Round 11: [Hdc2tog, hdc 2] x 2 – 6 hdc.
