I have an exciting invitation to extend to you! Every Wednesday for roughly the last 3 years, I’ve done a live video chat over on Facebook at 830pm est. We call it Wip Wednesday Live, and there’s a Facebook group to go along with it where everyone posts their current works in progress. It’s been so exciting to see it grow, and it’s now officially sponsored by my friends at @wecrochetofficial who have been offering a weekly prize of yarn and magazines for the last few months 🤩🥰. So many prizes, so many winners!
Then, something really crazy happened, and Facebook invited us into their new Stars Program to monetize the lives for the creator, whaaaaat. I’ve been doing these lives for so long, over 150 of them in total and the new invitation to monetize has been such an amazing joy! So now we have MORE prizes, and for the first time, a dedicated free crochet along for the viewers. And it’s all because this awesome community comes together 🥰🥰🥰. Join us tonight on the CoCo Crochet Lee Facebook Page at 830pm est to begin these beautiful stash busting squares that viewers voted we turn into an awesome bag! Instructions, tutorials, and community love are all involved, and I’m beyond excited ❤🥰.

The Yarn
For the Wip Wednesday Tote, you can use any yarn in your stash, it’s a great stash-busting pattern! I used 5 colours on my squares, and I love the way they turned out! They kind of have a retro feel to them, don’t you think? I used WeCrochet Mighty Stitch for my bag squares, each ball is $4.99 and it’s such a great medium weight yarn. It has a bit of a sheen to it which is always so nice! You can find it here >> Take me to Mighty Stitch Yarn
The WeCrochet Website describes Mighty Stitch:
“Mighty Stitch is a Superwash Superhero! A crafting powerhouse combining 20% Superwash Wool and 80% Acrylic, this yarn is perfect for garments, accessories, and blankets, too! When you need an easy-care yarn in a wide range of gorgeous hues, you’re sure to think, “Mighty Stitch to the Rescue!”.

Part Two – Joining Instructions

For Part Two of our Wip Wednesday Crochet Along, it’s time to join our squares together! Watch our Wip Wednesday Video here to see my favourite method of joining squares and follow this graphic to join your 13 Squares together.
Watch the Wip Wednesday Video Here : https://fb.watch/5mrdVKUVus/
Step One: Create a front panel and a back panel shaped like an X using 5 squares for each side.
Step Two: Use the 3 remaining squares to fill in the corners as shown by folding them in half. They will be sewn to the front panel on one side, and the back panel on the other side.

Part Three – The Handles and Finishing
The final part of our crochet along involves adding some cute Popcorn stitch handles to the tops of our bags! I have loved seeing all of your squares being posted in the CoCo Crochet Lee Community Group, and on Instagram!
Take a peek at the pattern for the handles of the Wip Wednesday Cal Tote Below!
Instructions:
Special Stitches
Popcorn = 5 dc in indicated st, drop working loop from hook, insert hook into 1st dc from front to back, place working loop back on hook and draw through 1st dc.
Reverse Popcorn = a backwards facing Popcorn Stitch, 5 dc in indicated st, drop working loop from hook, insert hook into 1st dc from back to front, place working loop on hook and draw through 1st dc (popcorn st will be facing the back).
Handle
Join at top edges of bag where the top-most 2 squares meet by slip stitching in the right side ch-2 space between the popcorn stitches.
Row 1: Ch 3 (does not count as a st), (Popcorn, ch 2, Popcorn) in ch-2 space, (Popcorn, ch 2, Popcorn) in next ch-2 space of adjacent square, turn–4 Popcorn sts, 2 ch-2 spaces.
Row 2: Ch 3, (Reverse Popcorn, ch 2, Reverse Popcorn) in ch-2 space, (Reverse Popcorn, ch 2, Reverse Popcorn) in next ch-2 space of adjacent square, turn.
Rows 3-6: Repeat Rows 1-2.
*add extra rows for a longer handle, or crochet less rows for a shorter handle.
Fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing.
Repeat Handle Instructions on the opposite side of the bag. Whip stitch the handles together at finishing edge, and weave in ends.
