Wip Wednesday Crochet Along – Houndstooth Comfy Cardigan

Welcome to another beautiful crochet along, it’s our sixth Wip Wednesday Crochet Along to date! For the friends who haven’t joined us yet, I have an exciting invitation to extend to you! Every Wednesday for roughly the last 3 years, I’ve done a live video chat over on Facebook at 830pm est. We call it Wip Wednesday Live, and there’s a Facebook group to go along with it where everyone posts their current works in progress. It’s been so exciting to see it grow, and it’s now officially sponsored by my friends at @wecrochetofficial and Furls Crochet who have been offering a weekly prize of yarn and magazines for the last few months 🀩πŸ₯°. So many prizes, so many winners!

Then, something really crazy happened, and Facebook invited us into their new Stars Program to monetize the lives for the creator, whaaaaat. I’ve been doing these lives for so long, over 150 of them in total and the new invitation to monetize has been such an amazing joy! So now we have MORE prizes, and for the first time, a dedicated free crochet along for the viewers. And it’s all because this awesome community comes together πŸ₯°πŸ₯°πŸ₯°. Join us Wednesday on the CoCo Crochet Lee Facebook Page at 830pm est to begin this beautiful beginner-friendly hat pattern! Instructions, tutorials, and community love are all involved, and I’m beyond excited ❀πŸ₯°.

The Yarn

Lion Brand Wool Ease

I’ve used Lion Brand Wool-Ease Yarn for my Wip Wednesday Cal Houndstooth Comfy Cardigan, and it is so dreamy! The colours are perfect for Fall, which is just around the corner. I can’t wait to wear this cardigan out to the pumpkin patch and to pick apples with my family!

About the Lion Brand Yarn Kit:

The Lion Brand Yarn kit is made up of all of the yarn and colours that I used for my Houndstooth Cardigan. While you don’t need to use this exact yarn, I highly recommend it! The weight and the colour of the yarn is perfect for this cardgian, and the price is perfect for a garment of this size. Wool-Ease yardage goes a long way, and is worth every penny for this luxury cardigan that you will want to last!

Materials

US Size J/10 (6.0mm) crochet hook, yarn needle, scissors, stitch marker.

Size/Measurements

Extra small, small, medium, large, 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x, 5xBust:  28–30 (32–34, 36–38, 40–42, 44–46, 48–50, 52–54, 56–58, 60–62)”

Part One – Testing your gauge!

Testing your gauge for a garment or wearable is so important! It makes the difference between having a finished item that fits, vs something that is too big or too small.

It all comes down to crocheting a small 4″ square to see if you can get the same size stitches as the designer, so…me! I tend to be more of a loose crocheter, so if you crochet tightly you will find that your square is coming out smaller than mine if we use the same crochet hook. You would need to go up hook sizes and try again until you can get your square to measure 4″.

Follow the pattern for the gauge swatch below to ensure that your Houndstooth Comfy Cardigan has the perfect fit!

Gauge

12 sts x 11 rows = 4”

Pattern for gauge swatch:

With MC

Row 1:  Ch 13, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each st across, turn–12 sc.

Row 2:  Ch 1, [sc, dc in next] across, turn.

Alternating between CC and MC here and throughout.

Rows 3-11:  Ch 1, [sc in dc, dc in sc] across, turn.

Notes

  1. Weave in ends as work progresses.
  2. Ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
  3. The pattern alternates between MC and CC unless otherwise stated.

Abbreviations

CC = contrasting colour

Ch = chain
Dc = double crochet

MC = main colour

Sc = single crochet

Sc3tog = single crochet 3 together

Sl st = slip stitch

Part Two – The Panels!

The Houndstooth Comfy Cardigan is made up of a few different pieces that are then attached together. There is the Back Panel, the two Front Panels (left and right sides), the two sleeves, the pockets, and the sash.

Once you have made all of these individual pieces, you can begin putting them all together to create your cardigan! Finally, the border is added at the end to give it a beautiful finish.

For the next part of our cal you will find the instructions for all of the pieces of the cardigan that you can begin working on now that you have finished your gauge swatch.

The assembly instructions will be added next week!

Part Three – Assembly

It’s time to put your Houndstooth comfy cardigan together!

We did a live video tutorial on Facebook demonstrating how to put the pieces together. You can find it here >> https://www.facebook.com/cococrochetlee/videos/645626596425585

And here are the written instructions:

Assembly

Sew Front Panel shoulder seams to Back Panel.

Sew Sleeves onto shoulders in space of the armholes.

Sew Sleeve closed starting at the wrist and moving towards the armpit.

Starting at the bottom of the side seam, sew the first 5” closed, stop, pin the pocket in place, sew around the opening of the pocket, continue sewing the remainder of the side seam to the armpit closed.

Secure the inside edge of the pocket by putting a few whip stitches in one of the inside pocket corners and tacking it to the inside of the front panel to keep it from peeking out the bottom.

  1. I don’t understand your directions for the gauge for the comfy cardigan! I’ve been crocheting for 20 plus years. I work the the first row and it comes out 4”. I do the second row and it’s curved and it has expanded. We are to to a sc, dc in one sc correct? So I try to do the next row with cc and I’m lost!!!!

    1. Hello! It’s a sc in the first stitch, and a dc in the next stitch. Only one stitch in each. You will get the same stitch count as row one.
