The Alice Cabled Vest is a cozy way to practice some beautiful crochet textures! Featuring the Diamond Stitch and a swirling cable, the Alice Vest is a cold-weather wardrobe staple! I’m so excited to offer The Alice Cabled Vest as a free crochet pattern below, but also as a Lion Brand Yarn Kit where you get all of the yarn (in any colour) plus the pattern delivered right to your door!

The Yarn
For the Alice Cabled Vest, I wanted to use something that would have a bit of stretch to it, a bit of sheen or gloss, and something that I could wash in the washing machine with my regular clothes. I have been sharing my clothes more and more with my teenager, Emma-Noel, and so this vest is going to get some mileage!
I landed on Lion Brand Basic Stitch yarn which is so lovely to work with, and is also an amazing price! You can find it in all sorts of amazing colours here:

Now that you’re all set, here’s the pattern for the Alice Cabled Vest!

Yarn
Lion Brand Basic Stitch (185yds/ 100g): 4 (4, 4, 5, 5, 6, 6, 7, 8) balls Prism.
Materials
US Size H/8 (5.0mm) crochet hook, yarn needle, scissors.

Size/Measurements
(Size small shown in photo). Xs (Sm, Med, Lg, 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x) – vest is close-fitted. If you would like a looser fit, choose a size larger. Bust – 30 (34, 38, 42, 46, 50, 54, 58, 62).
Gauge
14 sts x 10 rows = 4” in pattern stitch rows 1-4.
The Gauge was measured across a repeat of rows 1-4 over a series of several rows — 14 sts x 10 rows in pattern stitch rows 1-4.
You can take a section of the pattern stitch to achieve gauge so, an example would be:
((Keep in mind, this swatch is bigger than 14 sts x 10 rows, so you will need to measure just the size needed for the gauge. This swatch will end up being 24 sts for 15 rows.))

Seaming
With Wrong Sides Facing, seam shoulders leaving a few inches free on either neckline to allow space for the neck.
I recommend “trying it on” by laying the back panel across your back and using stitch markers to mark where your neck will fit across the back panel.
On the size small I was able to seam the entire front panel to the back but it’s a bit snug.
Seam sides from Armhole to Hem.
Collar (optional):
I added a ribbed collar to my vest that mimics the Hem stitching. It’s completely optional, you may enjoy your vest without the high collar.
Row 1: Fasten on to the 1st st of the inside bottom of the neckline, ch 1, place 3 sc in each ch-2 chain at the start of every other row, do not join, turn.
Row 2: Chain 9, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, sl st in the next 2 sc of Collar Edging, turn–8 sc.
Row 3: Ch 1, skip next 2 sl sts, sc in BLO of next 8 sc, turn–8 sc.
Row 4: Ch 1, sc in BLO of next 8 sc, sl st in next 2 sc of Collar Edging, turn–8 sc.
Rows 4–: Repeat Rows 3-4 all the way around the Collar.
Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Tack the outside edge of the collar down by stitching it to in line with the V of the vest. Leave the back edge free.
Armhole Finishing
Join to any st under the armpit.
Round 1: Ch 1, sc evenly around entire armhole, join.
Rounds 2-3: Sl st in BLO of each st around, join.
I hope you enjoyed this pattern, let me know if you make one of your own! I would love to see it over on instagram when you use the hashtag #cococrochetlee.
Happy Crocheting!!

Hi
I’m sorry – whereabouts should I start the project, the pattern stitch or the back panel?
Thanks
Hello! The back panel.
Do you have a video tutorial of the swatch or the special stitch? I’m having trouble on row 3 of the fptr2tog. It’s such a pretty pattern and I can’t wait to make it, but I just can’t get it right! Lol
Hey there! I don’t have one right now, I’m sorry!
Hi Laura,
I had the same problem with the rows with the cable stitches. Here is a link to a very good video of the Diamond Stitch. The stitches are not exactly the same, but it helped me understand the concept.
